Decluttering doesn’t have to feel like punishment. What if tidying up your home felt more like a game, with clear goals, a little competition, and a satisfying finish line? Enter The 100-Item Rule, a fun, fast way to simplify your space and decide what really deserves to stay.
What Is the 100-Item Rule?
It’s simple:
Choose one room at a time and limit yourself to 100 “keepers.”
That’s right, only 100 items can remain in that space. Everything else must find a new home: donate, recycle, sell, or store it safely in your Calloway Storage container.
The rule works because it forces you to prioritize. It transforms vague “decluttering” into a measurable challenge, and it’s surprisingly freeing.
How to Play
- Set the stage
Grab a few boxes labeled Donate, Recycle, and Storage Container.
(Tip: having your Calloway container right outside makes it even easier to sort and stash as you go.) - Count and choose
Start small, say, the living room. Count every object: décor, books, tech, throws, everything. When you hit 100 “keepers,” stop.
Then make fast decisions about the rest: Does it still serve a purpose or bring joy? If not, out it goes. - Gamify it
- Time yourself (30 minutes per room!)
- Compete with your partner or kids
- Keep score with our free printable 100-Item Scorecard, a visual tracker to help you stay accountable and celebrate progress.
- Reward yourself
Once you’ve completed a room, take a break. Enjoy the lighter, calmer feel of your space, it’s addictive in the best way.
When “Less” Needs a Place to Rest
Sometimes, you’re not ready to part with everything. Sentimental items, seasonal décor, or extra furniture can live comfortably (and safely) in a Calloway Storage container.
Our portable containers come to you, so there’s no hauling or hassle, just a clean, secure spot for the things you’re not using daily.
Why It Works
- Clear limits create quick decisions
- Gamification makes it fun and family-friendly
- Visual payoff keeps you motivated
- Portable storage gives you breathing room without goodbye guilt
