Self Storage Unit Size Guide

Selecting a Self-Storage Unit – What Size do I Need?

You’ve decided that you need to rent a storage unit to help with downsizing, long-term storage or to help with a move. What’s the next step? In order to get pricing and acquire the unit for your purpose, you need to decide on the size or dimensions of the locker.

We can help you with that. If you haven’t leased a self-storage unit before, it can be a challenge to conceptualize the size you need. You don’t want to under-estimate it and find out that you’ve run out of space with more furniture or boxes to store. You don’t want to over-pack the space so that it becomes impossible to easily retrieve belongings when you need them, or run the risk of damage by crushing objects under the weight of other boxes. Having the right sized unit will allow for better preservation of your contents and easier access. On the other hand, you don’t want to lease a unit that is so large that you are paying for more than you need.

As a reference guide we’ve listed some storage unit sizes and what room contents can easily be placed within that storage space below:

[5 x 10 feet] Fits furnishings of a mid-sized bedroom, including a queen-sized bed, a dresser, a TV and several small to medium-sized boxes.

[10 x 10 feet] Fits the contents of an entire family room or two full bedrooms, including several small to medium-sized boxes.

[10 x 15 feet] Fits furnishings of an entire family room as well as a mid-sized bedroom, including a queen-sized bed, a dresser, a TV and several small to medium-sized boxes.

[10 x 20 feet] Fits the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including several oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer and a dining room set or several large boxes.

[10 x 30 feet] Fits the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including several oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer a dining room set, as well as multiple beds, dressers or several large boxes.

[8 x 16 feet] Fits furnishings of an entire family room as well as a mid-sized bedroom, including a queen-sized bed, a dresser, a TV and several small to medium-sized boxes.

[8 x 20 feet] Fits the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including several oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer and a dining room set or several large boxes.

These are approximations, as furniture can vary widely in dimensions from over-stuffed large sectionals to smaller condo scale furnishings. To help estimate your locker size, take the dimensions of a room in your house and imagine that as your locker. Could a space the size of your 10×15 spare bedroom be adequate for your needs, or do you need a space the size of your 10×20 family room?
